Emergency electrician in Enfield

For an electrical emergency in Enfield, Edmonton or Palmers Green, check whether neighbours have power first and call 105 for UK Power Networks if they do not. If only your home is off, or a socket or shower is tripping with a hot smell, switch off at the main switch if safe and call an emergency electrician.

The homes in Enfield

Enfield is a borough of terraces. The Valuation Office Agency counts 37% of its 128,340 homes as terraced houses, the highest share of the areas we cover, plus 35% built between 1919 and 1939 and 23% before 1919. Edmonton and Bush Hill Park have Victorian and Edwardian terraces. Palmers Green and Winchmore Hill in N13 and N21 have Edwardian houses and interwar streets. Enfield Town and Southgate have many 1930s semis. 41% of homes are flats, many in converted houses. Long, narrow terraces often have the consumer unit by the front door and the kitchen and bathroom at the back, which means long cable runs to the busiest circuits.

Electric showers in Enfield terraces

Many terraces here had a bathroom added or moved at the back, often with an electric shower fed on its own circuit from the front of the house. Electric showers draw a lot of current. If a higher powered shower has replaced an older one without the cable being upgraded, or if the terminals inside the shower have burnt, the circuit can trip or overheat. A shower that trips, smells hot or has a scorch mark on its pull cord switch needs switching off and checking. Bathroom electrical work is a special location under Part P. Our advice on an electric shower that keeps tripping explains the causes.

If the shower has a pull cord isolator on the ceiling, switch it off there as well as at the consumer unit. Do not use the shower again until it has been checked, even if the circuit resets.

Flickering lights and loose connections

Flickering lights across several rooms usually point to a loose connection on the lighting circuit. In older terraces, lighting circuits have often been altered several times, with junction boxes under floorboards. A loose neutral at one of these joints can make lights in different rooms flicker or dim. If the whole street flickers, call 105, as that is a network fault. Our guide to lights flickering in the house covers what to check.

Converted flats and who to call in Enfield

Where houses have been split into flats, each flat usually has its own meter and board, often with meters together in the hall. If the hall light is on but your flat is off, the fault is on your side. Landlords need an EICR at least every 5 years under the 2020 regulations.

For a power cut affecting the street, call 105 or check the UK Power Networks map. For a fault inside your home, an electrician. Notifiable work, including a new shower circuit or a new consumer unit, is self certified by a registered competent person or notified to Enfield Council's building control. In long terraces the consumer unit is often by the front door, so keep a torch there. If you need to switch off in a hurry, you will be walking the length of the house in the dark.
